How to check in online

If you are new to air travel, first you need to know what is check in? Check-in is a process by which a passenger confirms his presence for a particular flight. Many airlines assure passengers of further details during the check-in process. For example- what the passenger will eat, what is the amount of luggage with the passenger, what seat the passenger is willing to sit in etc.
Whether you travel for business or for leisure, online check-in will save you a lot of time rather than waiting in line at the airport. It is an eternal fact that to get a flight check-in at the airport you have to get quite fast. There is always a huge line at check in. If you do not want to leave home 3 hours before the flight, check in online. It can take a maximum of 10 minutes to check in online.

Where to check in online?
You will find a tab called 'Web Check In' or 'Check In' in the menu of most airlines' websites. If you can't find the tab, login to your account on the airline's website and enter your booking details. Here you will find the online check in option.

How long before the flight can you check in?
The check-in option is usually available on the website 24 to 48 hours before the start of your trip. Check-in times for different airlines may vary. So be sure to read the check-in guidelines on your airline's website to know for sure.
What do you need ?
To check in online you need to specify which city you are going to. You need to specify your email ID and booking ID. Usually the booking ID is mentioned in the booking confirmation mail. If you haven't received or lost your booking confirmation mail, call the airline's customer service number.

Why do online check in ?
If you are a domestic passenger, the airline's website will give you an e-boarding pass as soon as you check in online. If you are an international passenger, you will be given a confirmation slip. In return you will get a boarding pass from the airport. With the printed e-boarding pass you will be relieved of the hassle of standing in long lines at the airport. If you check in online with modern airlines, you will also be given the option to choose your seat and food online.

What if I forgot to print the boarding pass ?
If you forgot to print your boarding pass, there is nothing to worry about. Modern airports have a kiosk that allows you to print boarding passes. If that is not possible then just show your ID and booking confirmation at the airline counter, you will be given boarding pass. Most airlines have separate counters for passengers checking in online where there are usually smaller lines.

Is online check-in possible for family or group travel ?
Yes, online check in is also possible for family or group travel. Airlines usually offer online check-in for up to 09 passengers per booking.
What will happen to luggage if you check in online ?
If you only have your carry-on bag with you, you can go straight to the security check. But if you have extra luggage, you have to go to the airline counter. Most airlines have separate baggage drop counters for passengers who check in online.

Should I arrive at the airport after checking in online?
Although online check-in reduces your boarding time a lot, it is wise to arrive at the airport early. Arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes before domestic travel and 90 minutes before international flight.
