What is Not Covered in Travel Insurance

What is not covered in Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans provide you with a range of coverage options such as overseas medical fee cover, compensation as a result of stolen property, and cancellation cost coverage.
However, there are some things that are not covered in travel insurance. Make sure that you are fully aware of what is and what isn’t covered with your travel insurance package.

Travel Insurance Does Not Cover All Stolen Items
When you look carefully, all insurance providers have certain lists of exclusions for what they can cover. While coverage of stolen personal items and luggage are fairly comprehensive, there are exclusions that are applied by some insurance vendors.
Some companies will not provide you with coverage if you experience theft because you leave your items unattended or at an unsecure location. Stolen items may require you to submit a police report from the local authorities to show evidence of the incident.

Claims from Reckless Activities and Behavior Can Be Rejected
Insurance claims made due to reckless actions can be rejected. Travel insurance doesn’t give you free reign to do as you as please. Examples of this include performing harmful actions under the influence of alcohol (or recreational drugs) and ignoring local laws.
There have been instances where tourists have been prosecuted due to behavior that results in damage to local property. It’s best to be aware of the local customs before you travel to any foreign country.

Changing Your Mind
Travel insurance doesn’t provide cover if you decide to change your mind about traveling. There are often options available from the vendor to purchase cancellation insurance if you do change your mind about traveling, but this is on a one-on-one basis.
For example, if you pay for the ‘Cancellation’ option from an airline, the cancellation will only cover fees associated with your flight. You will still have to pay out any cancellation fees from accommodation providers or leisure activities that you have already paid for. Our main piece of advice is to make sure that you can commit to your travel plans when you decide on your holiday.

Losses Incurred from Foreign Medical Treatments
Going overseas for cheaper medical procedures such as dental and skin treatments is a popular thing to do for many people. Treatments overseas can be a fraction of the cost; however, it is important to understand the risks involved if something does go wrong.
Travel insurance can provide coverage for medical fees incurred from an accident whilst in another country, but if you are travelling for medical reasons, the rules are a little different. If you are travelling for the purposes of receiving treatment, please make sure that you are well informed with the medical profession that you are operating with.
